NEW VOICES | THE LAUNCH OF 4WALL

FINE ART FROM THE WORLDS BEST CONTEMPORARY ILLUSTRATORS

4WALL's first two week exhibition will take place from February 7th - 18th 2006 at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London Bridge. There will be 50 original pieces of work from all 14 of our artists on show.

PRESS RELEASE

New Voices is the first exhibition and launch event for 4WALL, an online gallery promoting original contemporary illustration. 4WALL’s objective is to expose the world’s best illustrators as fine artists and exhibit accessible and affordable work that all generations and classes can enjoy.

The exhibition itself will feature 50 artworks from 14 artists in mixed media (drawing, printing, stencilling, manipulated photography, spraying, painting). The artists have been scouted from around the globe and are linked by their exceptional achievements in commercial illustration and their fearless modern approach to image making.

All work will be on sale at an affordable price. Drawings and framed prints under £200 will be available alongside original paintings, handmade badges, t-shirts and postcards. This is the perfect chance for real people to buy art from some of the greatest illustrators in the world.

Playing throughout the exhibition will be a wide range of voice-only music from 4WALL’s sister company 4EARS, with short live performances from 4EARS’ vocal artists and spoken word poets at the private preview.

NOTES ON THE ARTISTS:

John McFaul
John McFaul has been an image-maker, designer and design educator for over 10 years. With a unique graphic style - a mixture of intricate detailing, subtle mark making, digital aptitude and essential forms - his work is gaining an ever increasing global audience. He has admirers and collectors all over the world, and representation now in London, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and Paris. John is a true heavyweight and someone 4WALL thinks will go on to be considered a great.

Andy Potts
Andy is one of the most creative illustrators in the UK and has been recognised within the industry by a BAFTA nomination, an AOI award and the respect of just about every designer in the UK. His style is an original and very modern mix of photography, computer graphics, scanned textures and printing – which compliments his wry sense of humour and his uniquely intelligent approach to image making. In his field no one comes near and 4WALL is proud to exhibit his work.

Richard May
Pixelsurgeon and Black Convoy co-founder Richard May is one of the most popular illustrators in the world. He has produced hundreds of illustrations for a diverse range of clients, including Time, Time Out, Ray Gun, Wired, The Independent, The Guardian, and Time Warner Books. His clean lines, use of textures, urban style and iconic image-making has also led him to work with a number of bands including Echobelly, Punish the Atom, and Luaka Bop. In addition to an acclaimed solo show in 2001, Richard has taken part in various international group exhibitions, including FreshstART; The Design a Qee Expo 2004, and the Apartment Under Construction at New York’s oldest YMCA.

Daniel Egneus
Daniel is an artist in the every sense. For him, image making and everyday life are one and the same. His work is generally of a highly personal nature and the subjects rarely exist beyond his front garden. With no formal education to speak of, Daniel has thrived on talent alone and can boast illustration commissions not least from The Times Newspaper, Penguin, Ericcsson and Time Magazine. In the last few years he has also illustrated five books, innumerable comic magazines and the poetry of Aleksander Pusjkin. His original drawings are intensely coveted by his fans so collectors have to be quick.

David Foldvari
It is not an exaggeration to say that David’s unique body of work has made him an illustration celebrity in the last year. His eastern European roots, combined with his experiences of growing up in the UK, give him a powerful subject matter and his work often tackles issues of alienation, identity and belonging. His fine art work has been exhibited in London, New York, Japan, France, Germany, Slovenia and Hungary and his illustration clients include Nike, Penguin, Dazed & Confused, Final Home, Island Records, London Records and many more.

Mark Taplin
Since gaining an MA from Saint Martins in ’98, Mark has become one of the most diverse and original media artists in London. Alongside his inimitable illustration he has directed several short films, created animation for Mother/MTV/Intro/VH1/Playstation and worked with Abbey Road Studios on their DVDs and website. There is simply no mistaking Mark’s work and it is this which makes him so collectable and coveted by London’s top agencies and production companies.

Container
Container are Nicola Carter and Luise Vormittag. They met whilst studying Graphic Design at Camberwell College of Art, graduating in 2002. Having started as solo illustrators they now collaborate on each project undertaken, with stunning results. Having won the coveted Creative Review:Creative Futures prize in 2003, designed a window display for Selfridges on Oxford Street, hand-decorated the walls of Hotel Fox in Copenhagen and designed the cover for the 2005 Glastonbury program they are now artists of proven pedigree and gigantic ambition. 4WALL is featuring original drawings at over 7ft, embroidered cotton prints, badges, and prints from this dream team.

Miles Donovan
Peepshow co-founder Miles Donovan has produced hundreds of Illustrations for a diverse range of worldwide publications and contributed to high profile campaigns for Cuervo, Rolling Rock, Airtran and J Records. His work is extensively featured in ‘Pen and Mouse’, ‘Fundamentals of Illustration’ and ‘Digital Illustration’ and he has exhibited at Saatchi & Saatchi, St Luke’s, Ogilvy and Mather, Jaguarshoes, and the Apartment, New York. His first solo show ‘Fact presents Art: Miles Donovan’ at the Phonica Gallery, London was in the summer of 2004 and caused a swell of interest which grows by the day.

Tim Marrs
Since Tim graduated from Central Saint Martins with an M.A in 99’ his work has continued to develop and inspire. A combination of drawings, photography, screen-printing techniques and Photoshop gives Marrs’ work a hand made, dynamic and contemporary feel. His technique is one of the most influential styles in modern illustration and having worked for clients such as Saatchi and Saatchi, Ogilvy and Mather, Geffen Records and Jordan:Nike, Marrs is starting to get the recognition he deserves.

Paul Willoughby
Paul is superhuman in his ability to work as a professional illustrator, art director, publisher and prolific artist simultaneously. His illustrations are generally mixed media and, like his varied life, can change dramatically and quickly to suit the subject matter. He is a keen visionary, experimenting with different techniques and combining them digitally with found marks, textures, papers and graphics. Recently he founded and now art-directs the Little White Lies movie magazine and, as an extension of this project, runs The Church of London design agency.

Ric Stultz
Ric Stultz lives in the Riverwest area of Milwaukee, WI USA. He splits his time between drawing, painting, and designing for some of the greatest galleries and agencies across the US. His illustrated images are published and collected internationally but it is his stunning paintings which caused 4WALL to chase him down across America to exhibit. We think Ric has huge worldwide appeal and one of the most arresting styles in our group.

Mario Wagner
Since receiving his diploma from Aachen University Mario has lived and created his original work in Cologne. His illustrations have been commissioned by Adidas, Vice Magazine, Neon, Spex, Visions, Kilimanjaro Magazine, thisisamagazine, Graniph and for numerous t-shirts, records and CDs. Mario has already exhibited this year at the “Damen und Herren” gallery in Düsseldorf and “xhoch4” in Ingolstadt, causing him to become the most fêted illustrator in Germany.

NOTES ON THE MUSIC:

Music from 4EARS vocal-only artists will be playing throughout the exhibition. These include Redstar (who layer 70 tracks of vocal harmonies, sampled beat boxes and man made bass sounds into beautiful traditional songs), The Masdafarai Sound System (which includes man made hip-hop, traditional Indian singing and the intriguing flute-boxer), Sing (a vocal quartet who re-arrange the world’s most beautiful music for 4 part harmonies) and Becky Jones, who will be performing live at the opening night.

NOTES ON THE CURATOR:

The show is curated by 4WALL founder Sam Stubbings. Sam has worked in creative agencies for 7 years, spending time as the head of Abbey Road Interactive, Tantrum and Metropolis.
